Biocompatibility may therefore beĀ  defined as the ability of a material to induce/perform with an appropriate host response in a specific application [1,2]. The response should be such as to ensure the continued safe and effective performance of the material [1,2]. Furthermore, such materials should not be toxic or have unfavourable properties either due to direct contact or breakdown products. In addition, factors including physical, mechanical properties, design, and surface chemistry should also be considered carefully.
